There is so much going on tonight that I don't even know how to chose.
Luckily, I have friends that have made it somewhat easy.
I'll be hitting up the Beauty Bar to check out Gabe Vega's birthday Bash featuring The Airborne Toxic Event and a DJ set. This is how I will start my evening and then I'm going to head over to the Tower Bar to catch some awesome bands - The Scene, Roses on her Grave, and Scarlet Symphony.
It should be good times all around. I hope to make it to both, you just never know. You start drinking and then how do you drive?

An angry Morrissey reportedly slammed Madonna at his concert last night in Norfolk, Virginia: "I wouldn't be surprised if she [Madonna] made that African boy into a coat and wore him ... for 15 minutes, and then threw it away." He also told the crowd, "You haven't even heard what I'm gratified about yet. I'm very gratified to be so close to the international headquarters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals."

Junior Metro & DJ Sophie: Wheels of the Industry at Livewire 07/09/07
The music last night at Livewire was refreshing. It was new. It was dancy. It was/is what I needed.
DJ Sophie did a great job behind the tables and her selection of music flowed in a manner that made you want to dance and forget about any issues you may be having in your life. She played a lot of music from France (French post punk/new wave), which I hadn't really heard of, but glad I did. I'm a fan. Junior Metro mixed it up with some Dub, Reggae, and of course, Post Punk. He kept the crowd moving as well. It was all seemless and it just existed. It was mellow and it was perfect. But not too mellow where you felt you couldn't dance for a song or two.
I would love to see this happen again and at different venues. I think it's important to introduce people, including myself to all styles of music. It can only influence bands to create new styles and to mix them up to bring out different types of crowds. You want a mixed crowd. Isn't the point of playing to introduce people to your music and have them bring their friends who may not like your music, but since their friend does, why shouldn't they give it a try?
I'm all for another french post punk/new wave dance party! Let me know when.

Skull Cat Control at Beauty Bar! 07 07 07
Sophie, I hope you had a wonderful time last night! Happy Birthday - again!
Cat Dirt and Skull Control brought it last night. I really enjoyed myself and judging the crowd, everyone was having a blast.
It was non-stop music by the DJs, who in my opinion did a great job of keeping the mix exciting and happy. It made you want to dance and drink. The place was crowded, but comfortable. The bands played loudly and they sounded great. The cupcakes were absolutely delicious.
I had never seen The Vultures and I'm really happy I got to see them. Some of their songs reminded me of this band called "For Squirrels." They only put out one album during their career before they all perished in a bus accident during a tour, but they were great. They were high energy and interacted with the crowd and tried to get the crowd involved. I really liked how they fit the bill. They were similar enough to Fifty but different enough so that you wouldn't get bored knowing that this is what you'd be hearing for the rest of the night. I'd definitely go see them again and would recommend them to anyone.
Fifty on Their Heels came on and the place was excited. Many were there to see them and to dance. I heard a new song tonight that I hadn't heard before. I didn't catch the name, but it was dancy and catchy. I danced my way through their set which was fun and as far as I can tell, the guys felt great about it.
Skull Control finished off the night and had the dance floor packed and it never slowed down. After a major dance session with friends, I had to leave. I had an early call time!
I would deem this a most successful night.

Looks like they'll be rolling through San Diego. 65 DAYS OF STATIC will be their opening band throughout the whole tour.

Fifty on Their Heels will be playing with The Corvinas tonight at the Rhythm Lounge. Doors at 9pm, show at 10pm. It's in Point Loma - off Midway. You'll see the sign!
Joan Jett is at the San Diego County Fair tonight. Ticket says 4pm. She has two bands opening for her and it's going to be a big production. Admission is free with purchase of a ticket to the fair.

Eric Burdon & The Animals @ SD County Fair 06/20/07
In true fashion, Eric Burdon and The Animals started about 15 minutes late. He came out wearing shades and ready to rock. His band consisted of himself on vocals and 4 members: Red Young on keyboards, Eric McFadden on guitars, Paula O'Rourke on bass, Tony Braunagel on drums. And according to Burdon, Eric McFadden was present during some of the original recording sessions of The Animals. Paula, the bassist, was in a dress and boots. It reminded me of the way the band Hole would dress. The sound was fine after some fine tuning and the band seemed to be having a good time.
They played about 13 to 14 songs. They opened up with Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. And they spread out the hits (We've Got to Get Out of this Place, It's My Life(which the guy next to me sang very loudly), I Put A Spell On You, and See See Rider) throughout the set and mixed them up with his solo albums that were all blues and New Orleans type jazz. I'm sure they played some other hits, but I can't remember. During House of the Rising Sun, the crowd went wild. People were running up to the stage and standing in front of the people that were seated. Granted, it wasn't meant to be a seated concert. People would get chairs and sit down wherever, even on the dancefloor. You had the ex-hippies dancing around, re-living their past. There were a lot of people there from that generation and most with their families and the few that were there on dates, acting like they were that age again. The young crowd was surprising. It wasn't huge, but they were present and they were vocal.
Burdon and his Animals played for about and hour and a half and they got a standing ovation at the end. I had a good time, sipping on my beer, observing the crowd and chuckling to myself when he played his song, Mother Nature, and stated how he could smell people smoking "Mother Nature."

I got this email from the House of Blues. Ticket sales must be pretty low if they're doing something like this. I don't think they've done this before, at least not that I'm aware of.

Weird Al at San Diego County Fair 06/13/07 Review (Kinda)
I laughed pretty hard last night at the Weird Al Concert at the San Diego County Fair.
He had 4 piece band (guitar, bass, keys, and drums) with him and a huge screen he used during his costume changes. He opened with a medley of current songs ranging from Black Eye Peas, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Avril Lavigne and some others. He sang their lyrics, but in his style.
I think my highlight was perhaps seeing him strip down to a yellow SpongeBob SquarePants T-shirt and then unzipping his fly and taking off his pants to reveal boxers and a pink tutu, all the while singing to James Blunt's "You're Beautiful," but a la Wierd Al. He also did a Star Wars paradoy and ended up grinding on a fan. hahaha
He played for about two hours and there were some sound/technical issues. The mix was too loud. It seemed like the sound guys weren't on the same page. I know during one of his "interviews" all sound was lost. All you heard was the booing of the fans, but it was fixed rather quickly.
He intervied Jessica Simpson (who like's to do it pdiddy style (back to back)), Mariah Carey, Madonna, Celine Dion, Justin Timberlake and a few others.
I'm happy I treked it. The traffic wasn't bad at all and the food was good.
I even caught a little of The Fab Four's set (Beatles Tribute Band). They were pretty good. They play all the instruments live and they sing everything. I'd definitely see both bands again.

Cold War Kids at Street Scene 2007
You heard it first at SD: Dialed In.
I'm excited. I've never seen them. I think it'll be fun. The White Stripes though are another story. I've seen them live and I thought they were boring. But since the Cold War Kids are touring with The White Stripes, there's a good chance that they will be coming to San Diego.
I just really, really hope they get the Smashing Pumpkins on the bill.

Happy Monday!
I didn't get a chance to run around to any shows this weekend. I was busy with non-music type activities. I had a lot of fun.
I did make it out to the Del Mar Fair yesterday. It wasn't as croweded as I thought it would be, but closer to 6pm I started to see all of the Lupillo Rivera fans coming out and getting ready for his show. It was interesting.

Morrissey at Embarcadero (Viejas Bayside) 06/03/07 Review
I went. I was very up in the air about going. I had seen him before and had great experiences and now that he's older, I felt that it might ruin what I had seen before and leave an ugly taste in my mouth.

I got there about a little after 7pm and I was able to hear Kristine Young play her set while I was in line waiting to get in. It was the longest line I have ever seen to get into that place! She sounded good. She's a two-piece. She's on the keys and the other guy was on some other instrument - sorry, I forgot. hehehe
Before Morrissey took the stage, he was showing clips of black and white movies, my favorite being the East of Eden clips with James Dean. I had/have a slight obsession with him since I was 14. Once that was done, the screen dropped and his backdrop showed 3 side-by-side pictures of James Dean - great stuff!
Morrissey came on looking all swank. I was surprised by how good he looked. He's in his early 50s and still has it going on. He opened with The Queen is Dead and I was hooked. I had seen him twice before - many, many moons ago and I left every show beaming. He got really sweaty fast. He took off his shirt very early into the set and I am proud to report that he's keeping in shape. He went backstage and changed into a different shirt, but it didn't really matter. He had the back sweat and he even had titty sweat. Close your eyes and imagine that! hahahaha
The sound was not the best. I saw Radiohead at this venue and they blew me away. Morrissey needed a lot more power and a lot more sound coming from his speakers and monitors. He alluded to this right from the beginning by asking the crowd how it sounded out there because it sounded "shitty" up here. He was constantly playing with his mic and his in-ear monitor. He wasn't happy with the security. They were being assholes with the crowd. I mean, come on, it's Morrissey, the fans aren't that crazy! He would even start some of the songs off-beat. I'm sure this didn't help his mood, being the diva that he is. He even gave his mic to a few fans so that they can talk!
The setlist that was provided to the sound guys had 2 encore songs and 2 additional songs he omitted. I was bummed about that because I really wanted to hear 2 of those songs. He did a great job vocally. He still has it. Morrissey was moving around, playing to both sides of the stage. He was doing his ever-famous mic cord swaying manevouer (however you spell that). Everytime he does that, I want him to sing "Boy Racer". I LOVE that song. I was surprised by the amount of energy he gave to the audience in the beginning, but then it all went downhill.
I'm sure the sound and technical issues he was having and the crowd being a little unresponsive at times didn't help his mood. He ended up leaving half way through "How Soon is Now" and didn't really sing much of the song. He didn't bother to say bye or come out for an encore. He just left without any word. The lights came on, but we still had hope - no one was breaking things down. But once the production crew came on, we knew it was over and I was sorely disappointed. I wasn't disappointed with the actual show, I was disappointed with his exit. I have not been to a concert that just ended so abruptly. I truly hope that this was just a one show fluke and that his remaining dates are even better.

There was this guy that was at least 6 feet tall and he was elbowing shorter girls that were either trying to move up front or being pushed up front because the oh so many thousands behind her were making her move towards the front. And this guy just wasn't pushing back, he was winding up and swinging his elbows into people. There were people talking shit to others. You had the shorter people telling the taller people to move to the back. Um, if they waited at the venue since 1pm, I don't care how tall you are or aren't, you deserve to be up front.
We were out of there at around 930pm and headed over to Tivoli's for a drink. I still love Morrissey. I just hope he doesn't get all diva like this again and kicks ass for the rest of his tour.
Will I see Morrissey again? I don't know, probably not.

Fifty on Their Heels, Teenage Talking Cars, Chief Death Rage @ Tower Bar 06 02/07 Review
I had so much fun at the Tower Bar on Saturday night. I had never been there and I'm glad we finally made the trek. The drinks were cheap and quite delicious, the music was loud and full of energy and The Toxic Avenger was playing in the background. What more could I have asked for?
We showed up a little after Chief Death Rage, from Denton, Texas, started to play. Can I tell you how awesome they are? At first I was a little put off by the loudness of the band. I think I might have sustained some hearing damage, but after I got use to the sound volume, I saw the light. They reminded me a lot of Ministry. They were pretty dark and hardcore. And they packed a lot of punch for being a 3-piece. So are two of them twins? I tried to really check them out without checking them out,but I couldn't tell. I didn't want to get all stalker on them! I couldn't make out a lot of the lyrics, but I was enthralled with the music and the playing. The drummer, also the singer, had no kick drum! I loved it. He stood up most of the time, if not all of the time while singing/playing. Now that I think of it, I don't think he even had a stool out there. Hmmm. Anyone confirm that? The sound was a bit muddy,and I don't know if that was a combination of the place and the instruments, but it didn't stop me from buying their record. $5? No problem. It's all about supporting touring bands. You want them to keep coming back.
After another drink, we were ready for Teenage Talking Cars from Los Angeles. Before I get into that, can I say that I love the bartenders at the Tower Bar! I didn't really have to wait for a drink and they were all about service. I think we tipped them more than our drinks cost because we were so damn happy with the service!
I had never seen this band and some were surprised that I hadn't. I'm glad I finally caught them. They're a four piece with this energy/vibe to them that put a smile on my face. They wanted to be there; they wanted to play. I loved the drummer. She was beating the shit out of the drums and she was singing along to some of the songs. I loved the non-vocal communication going on between the band. It was a mixture of hand signals and facial expressions. The lead singer was always trying to talk to the audience, trying to get them to participate. I dug her voice and I dug the guitars and the bass. They had some strange sounds coming out of their equipment, but they were all well-placed. Their songs were short and sweet and non-stop. My jaw dropped at the very end of their set. They did the unexpected, in my eyes at least. The drummer and the guitarist did this matador and bull dance, right out of the bull ring. He jumped on top of the kick drum, jumped off, the whole time making faces at the drummer. She looked scared, but excited. He walked backwards into the crowd and runs, full steam ahead into the drummer and the drum set, knocking her down and knocking the drum set to pieces. It was CRAZY! I couldn't believe they did that. And then reality set it. They were using Nick's drum set. Luckilly, the show went on and the drum set was not harmed. CRAZY!
Fifty came on and didn't disappoint. Junior and Co set-up so they were super close to the audience - just the way he likes it. They played a great set. Justin took off his shirt and I could've sworn I heard someone yell out their devotion to him! Junior had some mic troubles of the "limp" kind. It just wouldn't stay in place. He of course had some great helpers that would help him "readjust" his mic when it needed it. And Nick took off his ever-present shades while he was playing. The crowd was very responsive and into it. People were bouncing around, singing along and drinking the night away. It was a late show, but it didn't feel like it at all. I snuck away after I bought their 7" and said my goodbyes as I was tired and a bit buzzed. :)
They had their new 7" available for sale for only $5 or $3 or I don't remember. I bought two because I hate it when I lose something I love and now I have a replacement, just in case. The artwork is cool and the quality of the vinyl is good as well. It's definitely a great buy. You can buy it at Record City and Taang! Records, which are both located in Hillcrest.
All in all - a great night filled with great music and friends. Loved it!

Please expect to be stepped on, get your hair pulled, have tall people in front of you, have short people in front of you, have smelly people EVERYWHERE, have massive surges throw you every which way possible, and perhaps have beer or whatever thrown at you.
I still don't understand the people that complain about these things. They are simple facts. This is what happens - especially if you're trying to make your way up front. Don't put yourself in the crowd if you're not prepared for this sort of behaviour.
And you know what I hate, the giant 6 foot or perhaps taller guy(s) that get all agro and decide they have to start elbowing girls in the chest so they don't move in front of them. These girls were small, but that didn't stop him. What a douche!

So I just heard that John Mayer entertained at a private shindig aka grand opening at The Ivy Hotel in San Diego last Thursday, May 24th.
He played for the VIP crowd and I guess they all had a great time.

2007 Street Scene at Del Mar Fairgrounds
I have it under good authority that Street Scene WILL be at The Del Mar Fairgrounds this year.
There will be 5 stages to choose from. They will have 2 small stages, 2 big stages, and an even bigger stage. This probably means that they'll have a good variety of acts and perhaps more than last year.
They'll have a V.I.P section and 2 large backstage areas and a major food court section in one of the buildings.
What else? Um, nothing else for now.
I'll keep you posted.

The fashion show features Pure Boutique, Pt. Loma Boardroom, Kate Ross, Gila Rut (where I get my hair did), and several others.

UCSD SunGod Festival 05/18/07 with T.I., Third Eye Blind, Ben Kweller, Fifty on Their Heels, Ozomatli...
I know, I know, this is late. I had a busy weekend. I look like a lobster at the moment.
I enjoyed myself at this concert. I had mixed feelings going in because I'm not a big fan of the venue or of it's parking situation. My night started off with having a hard time finding parking and having to listen to Fifty on Their Heelswhile driving around. I was hoping to see them on stage, but what can I do. They sounded great, really clear and crisp from the parking lot and while I was walking towards the Rimac Ticket Window for my ticket (Thanks Cat Dirt!).
You can find a really, really good review of the concert over at Cat Dirt Sez. It's a lot fresher and probably more detailed than mine will be. I mean, it's been a couple of days. :)
Walking in around 7ish, I noticed that they were holding back the line and not allowing people to come in. I heard that they were holding this particular group of people for about 15 minutes. Perhaps it was the fact that all UCSD students got in free. I'm sure they were trying to regulate so that the security guards wouldn't get into trouble.
No beer or beer garden, which sucked, but was nice. I spent way less than I thought I would. They had your tasty fair food and some super cool big plastic slides. The stages were set-up right next to each other and the bands came on promptly at their said times. I liked the fact that I didn't have to wait 15-30 minutes in between acts - as one ended, the other went right on. I LOVED that.
The backstage goodies and seating area was a real treat. Plenty of food, drinks, and coffee, which kept me going towards the end of the night. It was great to be able to sit on a chair and not on the grass when I got tired. And it was fun to sit there and see people get carted away by the police. Do people ever learn?

They were supposed to play for an hour, but being 3EB, they played longer. They played a lot of their hits and people were singing along like crazy. When he played "Graduate" the place lit up. I'm sure there were a ton of graduates in attendence. They had a lit Third Eye Blind sign on stage, which was cool. Steven Jenkins came out looking normal, except for the velvet jacket and the top hat he wore during some songs. He did a great job working the crowd and keeping them with him. I like Third Eye Blind, and I sang along, but it got way too long towards the end. They should have stuck to their hits and dropped the lesser-known songs. I took a ton of pictures, which will be posted later and some video of Jenkins singing and of the crowd singing along. I'm not happy with the sound quality, but you'll get the general idea. Two songs were cut out because of them going over their time (God of Wine and Slow Motion). Why do they even want to play those songs?

Ozomatli was up next. During Third Eye Blind's last song, you could hear Ozomatli fans chanting "Ozomatli" rather loudly. I found it funny and well-deserved as 3EB was well over their set-time. They came out in their usual fashion. I have seen Ozomatli several times over the many years they have been around and I still think that their original members rocked it and while they're still alive and kicking, it's not the same in my eyes. They had a great crowd, people dancing, and singing. After taking some pictures, I went and grabbed some coffee and chocolate to refuel and be ready for T.I.
There was a lot of anticipation for T.I. I had never seen him and I like his music, not love it, but like it. I think he's a total cutie and has talent. I managed to get a couple of pics of him walking onto the stage and when he walked right by me, I couldn't help but notice how small he was. I think he's my height or perhaps a tad bit smaller and he's so thin! But he still looked good. He came out in this gray hoodie and jeans and stole the show. He had 3 guys on stage with him, not including his DJ. He was all over the stage and all about the crowd, even asking if there were "any freaks" out there, if you know what I mean. And of course the whole crowd screamed. I would totally go see him at another concert. I think it would be fun. It might be a completely different crowd than the one at UCSD, but I bet you it would be fun.
I have to say many thanks to the CatDirt Family for including me in this little adventure. I had a great time and enjoyed myself immensly. I was super tired when I got home and woke up singing "How's it going to be" by Third Eye Blind. hahaha

Allen Toussaint with A.J. Croce at Birch North Park Theater
Where do I begin?
I was not impressed with the way the Birch North Park Theater is run. It was disorganized. They have volunteers working there that are not so smart. I found out they get paid $35 a show and most of the volunteers take whichever seats they can find and stay there - even hide when a PAYING customer comes up to them and asks them to move because they are in his/her seat. You would think the volunteer would get up and move, but no. Security just gets a chair from the back and sits the paying customer at the end of the aisle. It was shit like this that probably won't get me back to the theater.
The sound. It wasn't that great. A.J., the piano, the guitars, they were not microphoned properly. The sound was way too low. They didn't even have the monitors on for the first 2 or 3 songs. The seats were too small and a bit uncomfortable.
A.J. Croce took the stage promptly at 8pm and started on the piano. This was my first time seeing him and I liked him. I wish he would've played more songs off of his Cantos CD. I think he only did two. He is super talented. He was awesome on the piano and the guitar. His band consisted of a gentleman named Michael, who I think tours with A.J. on a regular basis. He was on an acoustic guitar the whole time and you can tell that his parts weren't scripted for the most part. He just played what he heard/felt.
He plays the type of music that I don't normally listen to, but I can respect. I've always been a sucker for the piano, so I was entertained. He did his rendition of "Maybe I'm Amazed," originally by Paul McCartney. I think he does it better than McCartney and it's one of my favorites of A.J.'s. He told stories between each song, and sometimes the stories were longer than the songs. It wasn't too bad - he made me laugh, but more songs would have definitely been better. He didn't have a set list and was taking suggestions from the audience, so that was cool.
There was a brief intermission before Allen Toussaint took the stage and since I knew we weren't going to stay for the whole set, we decided to forgo our 5th row seats and sit in the back so we could sneak out. Well, the volunteer told us we couldn't do that and that we had to take our proper seats and I got pissed off because we were trying to be polite - stupid volunteer. So we left.
I heard that Allen Toussaint was great and he played for 90 minutes and then after his set, A.J. and Toussaint did this dueling piano/piano forte type thing that was really cool.
Overall, it was an okay experience. The venue really turned me off, but A.J. made it worth it.

It is Mother's Day, so you might get lucky and get there to see very few people.

Slayer and Marilyn Manson?
I was reading Rosey's SD:Dialed In and she announced that Marilyn Manson and Slayer are teaming up to tour together. Bleeding Through and one other band will be opening for them. Their tour starts July 25th in West Palm Beach, Florida and ends on September 1st in San Antonio, Texas. They're stopping in San Diego on August 25th at the iPayOne Center.

Wolfmother at Viejas 05/08/07 Review
Where do I begin? I guess it all began in the parking lot drinking with the boys - AGAIN!
We arrived while the opener (Zombie Brides, I think) were on. We got to see the last two songs, but I really wasn't paying attention because I was distracted by the merchandise. I found it very cleverly placed. As soon as you walk in, it's to your left. You can't miss it. It's a great way to get people to buy, buy, buy. I unfortunately didn't buy anything because, well, the merchandise available online is much better than what they were offering. I did change my mind towards the end of the night, so I went to see if they had the hoodie in my size, but they were sold out. Good job guys!
I think that Wolfmother did an incredible job playing to a sold-out crowd in San Diego. They started with Dimension and then went right into their album favorites. They played a couple of new songs, but not too many. They basically stuck to their debut album. Rumor is that they are working on a new album - cross your fingers because if their news songs are any indication of what their next album is like, it will rock, rock, rock. And another rumor floating around is that they will be getting a new guitar player. I hope it's an addition and not a replacement.
They played for about an hour and a half and that's pretty good considering they only have one album out. At least half of the songs were stretched out beyond the recording time on the album, so it was interesting to see where they went with it. They have a lot of simple parts that they turned into these huge waves of sound. I found it great the first couple of times, but then I got a bit bored with it. I understand, but at the same time, eh.
The lead guitarist, Andrew Stockdale changed guitars at least 5 times, I stopped counting after 5. He used at least 3 different guitars, if not more. He even brought out a double-neck guitar and shredded away. I dug his guitar playing and I really liked the drumming of Myles Heskett. He kept it simple, yet complex and added the right touches when they were needed, and he was kind of cute. The surprise for me was the Bass player, Chris Ross. He was making me laugh. Everytime he jumped on the keys, he would explode. I mean he was throwing that thing around so hard I thought it was going to break and fall apart. I swear he had some sort of hydraulics on that thing!
The crowd went wild towards the end, especially when they played Woman. People were crowd surfing, especially the young ones. Didn't anyone tell them that if they get dropped, they fall hard? I don't think so because I saw one or two little boys limp away. hehehe It was very cute. I saw a lot of high school kids, elementary school kids, fathers and sons and boys that were more concerned with their hair than with the band. And we of course had our flashers. According to the boys I was with, it was nothing particular. I think the word flat-chested was mentioned.
Waiting in line to pick up some beer (3 for $24 - it was cheaper than Coors!), I overheard a guy talking to his friend about how "Wolfmother is our generations Led Zeppelin." I don't necesarilly agree with this. I think this statement is said over and over again because they sound so much like them, but they have their own sound, in their own right.
I truly loved this concert. I think it was money and time well spent. If you get a chance to see them, do it.

Scarlet Symphony to reunite? FM 94.9 Indie Jam
According to Chick Rawker Scarlett Symphony will be reuniting and playing at FM 94.9's Indie Jam taking place at Southwestern College in Chula Vista on Sunday June 10th.
I've seen them once, a long while ago and I enjoyed their stuff. I think a friend even has an old EP of theirs. I may have to check out 94.9's Indie Jam this year, they have announced a good line-up of Interpol, Kings of Leon, Spoon, The Living Things, Aggrolites, and Test Your Reflex. Tickets are only $40 with no service charge and $1 of every ticket goes to the About The Music fund. Tickets go on-sale on the 12th. You can buy them online through the Casbah or in person at M-Theory Records in Mission Hills and at either one of the two San Diego Hydroponics and Organics locations

San Diego County Fair News
New to the San Diego County Fair this year is the fact that the previously 21 and up stage (Coors Light Rock-On Stage) will be all-ages! They will have a beer garden near the stage for the drinkers.
Good? Bad?
I'm in the middle about it. I liked buying my drinking and walking to the front of the stage. I hope they don't put the beer garden in some weird place near the stage. We'll see.

Art Walk/Padres Game
I spent most of my day at the Art Walk in Little Italy. The weather was absolutely beautiful and I even got a slight tan from being out, walking around. For some reason, I thought there were less booths and people this time around compared to last year. I saw some really cool art that I would have loved to buy, but I don't think I could afford the $2000 price tag! I just can't justify spending that much money on a painting, at least not on my salary! hahaha
I had to go home and take a nap because I was tired as hell and I was going to the Padres game that night. We won 3-2. It was a fun game. My roomie had tickets and she invited me. The Dodger fans outnumbered the Padres fans by a lot, but there weren't many fights going on as far as I can see. I was a little upset though. You know how they throw t-shirts and rubber balls to fans in the stands? Well, I almost caught two of those rubber balls, but missed! I had a beer in one hand and well, I was always told to NEVER LET GO OF YOUR BEER! hahaha So it was rubber Padres balls vs. beer and well, you know what won. hahahaha

Astra & Society! at Ken Club - Friday Night
After consulting SD: Dialed In, we decided to go to the Ken Club to see Society! and Astra. We also wanted to go to the Casbah to check out Transfer, and had even thought about going to both, but the cover charges to both places made our decision for us. $5 at the Ken Club, $10 at The Casbah and the Ken Club is close to home base, so it made the decision that much easier.
I went onto myspace to check out Astra because I hadn't heard of them, and I wasn't too impressed. It was very mellow and I wasn't in the mood for mellow as I was tired from my long week of very little sleep, but we went anyway. We had to give them a chance, right?
We hung out in the bar, drinking and listening to the music before Astra came on. Once on, we headed over to the other side and found us a nice little booth - big mistake. Combine the booth with the mellow music and I was ready to go to sleep by their third song. It was too mellow for my mood that night and they were more instrumental than anything. They used their vocals here and there, but not enough. I dug the sounds they created and used, but it just wasn't the right time for me.
We headed back over to the bar to grab a couple more drinks and then outside to get fresh air to wake up a bit before Society! started and I'm glad we did. It made a difference.

Heaven and Hell Tour 04-26-07 Review
Wayne's World!
This was my first Metal concert ever. And what did I do? I spent most of it in the parking lot chugging CHEAP beer with the boys.
We arrived a bit late, so we missed Machinehead, but while chugging said cheap beer, and discussing the futility of living in San Diego without an ID, Megadeath came and went.
We booked it into the Coors Ampitheater so that we wouldn't miss Heaven and Hell. Our seats were in the 300 section, so they weren't the best in the house, but we were in the center, so that had to count for something. Coors wasn't sold out, but it was packed - standing room only except for the last 6 rows. They even shut down the grass area!
The crowd was a great mix of young and old - fathers with their sons, girlfriends, boyfriends, families, people who showed up alone (got lost), groups of guys so drunk it made you laugh - you name it, you got it. I kept thinking of a scene out of Wayne's World.
After paying a measly $39 for 3 beers (THE BEST BEER I EVER HAD!), we went to our seats. Yes, you read that right, $39 for 3 beers!
We didn't wait long for Sabbath, I mean Heaven and Hell to appear. And when they did, they made a scene. I was completely enthralled with the set. It looked like an old house with gates on each side with walls of speakers behind them. The drummer's throne was in the center and it was up high. They had a screen behind them that changed depending on the set and the songs. It went from an old castle like thing, to angels in the background, to plain bricks, to the Star Trek flying through space intro looking thing. The band played their own material, but they also played a lot of Classic Black Sabbath, according to the boys I was with. They played for nearly 2 hours, which was a surprise because nowadays, you don't get to see people on stage for that long and actually do a good job. I think they would've played longer if they were allowed to.
The drummer (Vinny Appice) sometimes looked like he had wings when the light hit him at certain angles. I think it was because of the drum set-up. I've never seen a drum set like that - EVER! He had towers set up, full of cymbals and a bunch of things I don't know the names of and he even had a kick drum behind him - which he played, with sticks, standing up! What?! Yeah - his drum solo lasted like half an hour, well, not really, more like 3 minutes, but it was good.
The guitar player (Tony Iommi) was beyond great. He did a solo as well and I never once got bored. I mean he kept going and going and he was bending those strings like if they were unbreakable. I can't believe the skill this guy has. Granted, he's been playing for years, but damn...
The bass player (Geezer Butler) was good, but his sound was kind of mushy. You couldn't really hear the bass all that well. Like Adam said, "you could feel the bass, but you couldn't necessarily hear it." But he even had a solo going on, shorter than the others, but it was in there.
The vocalist was also fun to check out. Ronnie James Dio was something to see. I kept thinking "old man body in tight clothes". hahaha Don't do it! Don't do it! He was rocking in his old age and he was doing a great job. I really like his voice with the band, probably because you could still make out with he was singing!
Heaven and Hell is made up of 3 of the original Black Sabbath members -Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice. Dio took over vocals when Ozzy Osbourne had to go into rehab to deal with his addictions.

Pioneer Park aka Calvary Cemetery
I was reading this weeks CityBeat and I came upon an article about Pioneer Park, which used to be Calvary Cemetery.
What weirded me out is the fact that the bodies are all still there! They just removed the headstones, which they threw over a ravine behind Mount Hope Cemetery, which are/were visible to passengers taking the trolley! It is a total scene from a movie! hahaha Taking the trolley home, you look to the left or right and what do you see - a bunch of headstones! I guess this all came to light in the 80s, so they took some of the headstones back to the "park", but didn't put them in the proper places, just off to the side and they built a memorial and what not to give the cemetery and the people buried there some recognition.
I know that there may be other cemetery's that were built over - like Old Town's, but for some reason, this freaked me out. I guess the thought of having a picnic over someone's loved one is not my sort of thing.

You will be amazed by the talents of legendardy Allen Toussaint. He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, a wonderful musican, and is a 2007 Grammy nominee. He hails from New Orleans, so you know it's going to be soulful!
Opening for Allen Toussaint will be A.J. Croce . He is a local musician with his own record company - Seedling Records. He currently has Dirty Sweet, Gregory Page, and Gilbert Castellanos, all local favorites. A.J. Croce is the son of Jim Croce - singer-songwriter from the 60's & early 70's that died tragically in a plane crash in 1973. A.J. has his own voice and is a very talented musician. He's at home on the piano, but is a great guitar player.
So go check it out!

Arctic Monkeys playing at the Troubador (LA) on Sunday, April 29th!
This just in, Arctic Monkeys will be playing a surprise Los Angeles Show at the Troubador. All tickets can be purchased through The Troubador directly by fax or in person. There is a two limit ticket. They'll also be at Coachella this Friday.

Ricky Martin still has a nice ass!!
Thanks to my wonderful sister, I got to see Ricky Martin at the IPayOne Center last night. He is currently on his Black and White Tour. He is considering this like his "greatest hits" tour. He does have a new cd out - it's the Ricky Martin: MTV Unplugged Album version with a couple of new tracks, but mostly old stuff. It was nice to see him singing all his old stuff and not just the new stuff.
Let me backtrack a bit. You might be wondering why I'm writing about Ricky Martin. Well, to be honest, I like him. I've liked him from way back in his Menudo days. I think he is very talented and he puts on an awesome show. I have never missed a concert whenever he decides to roll into San Diego. It has become a sort of tradition for my sister and I. We even had my grandmother, aunts and cousins come with us as well. He's my musical act that I don't talk about, but secretly love. I mean people always look at me funny when I tell them I went to a Ricky Martin concert.
I like that his music appeals to all generations. The crowd last night was very diverse. San Diego and Tijuana were definitely in the house. You had your groups of girlfriends, boyfriends, boys scoping out the chics, grandmothers with their granddaughters, etc. IT was fun and funny at the same time. And yummy caramel apple slices and churros. hahahahaha
Ricky Martin took the stage at around 8:40 pm and ended around 10:15ish or so. He had that same sort of screen that dropped down like Justin Timberlake used on his tour, but I think Ricky Martin used it better. He had two parts of the stage that came out into the audience and it had a sort of treadmill on it that he would use.
I really enjoyed the concert. He did a great job working the audience. I do have to admit that at certain times, I became bored. In my opinion, I think it was in the way he presented some of his faster, more upbeat dance songs. I've seen him play his hits in so many different ways that it's interesting to see that evolution, but there's nothing like the originals.
And this time, he only had 5 costume changes. Last time I saw him, it was way more than that. And I only counted them as costume changes when he changed his bottoms, not just his shirts. I do have to admit that I liked most of his costume changes, they definitely accentuated his finer qualities. hehehe I don't care what you say, tha boy has a body, but ugly feet. hahaha
There was a short piece playing during one of his costume changes that was basically him butt-naked, but not really and he had tattoos all over his body that had specific messages in both english and spanish. He considers himself a huge humanitarian, so he uses his concerts to spread the word. This time around, partial proceeds from each ticket of the Black & White Tour was donated to support The Ricky Martin Foundation - which advocates for the well being of children around the globe in critical areas such as social justice, education and health. The audience oohed and awed everytime they showed a pec or an arm or a leg or an almost crotch shot, but when they showed his feet, not much noise. IT was great.
I also enjoyed watching the girls/women run by security to get closer to Ricky. The poor security could not stop this crowd. IT was funny to see. And boy was I glad it wasn't my job to have to stop them. I'm sure they would have drawn blood if it came down to it.
He played a lot of my favorite songs. I don't have a set list for you all as I was too busy looking around and laughing and talking to my sister. I'm sure it'll turn up somewhere. The sound at the IPayOne Center sucked, but that was to be expected. IT's never been any good. Ricky's dancers did a great job. They were totally high energy and working it. You saw them sweating their butts off.

He had that same sort of screen that dropped down like Justin Timberlake used on his tour, but I think Ricky Martin used it better. He had two parts of the stage that came out into the audience and it had a sort of treadmill on it that he would use.
I really enjoyed the concert. He did a great job working the audience. I do have to admit that at certain times, I became bored. In my opinion, I think it was in the way he presented some of his faster, more upbeat dance songs. I've seen him play his hits in so many different ways that it's interesting to see that evolution, but there's nothing like the originals.
And this time, he only had 5 costume changes. Last time I saw him, it was way more than that. And I only counted them as costume changes when he changed his bottoms, not just his shirts. I do have to admit that I liked most of his costume changes, they definitely accentuated his finer qualities. hehehe I don't care what you say, tha boy has a body, but ugly feet. hahaha
There was a short piece playing during one of his costume changes that was basically him butt-naked, but not really and he had tattoos all over his body that had specific messages in both english and spanish. He considers himself a huge humanitarian, so he uses his concerts to spread the word. This time around, partial proceeds from each ticket of the Black & White Tour was donated to support The Ricky Martin Foundation - which advocates for the well being of children around the globe in critical areas such as social justice, education and health. The audience oohed and awed everytime they showed a pec or an arm or a leg or an almost crotch shot, but when they showed his feet, not much noise. IT was great.
I also enjoyed watching the girls/women run by security to get closer to Ricky. The poor security could not stop this crowd. IT was funny to see. And boy was I glad it wasn't my job to have to stop them. I'm sure they would have drawn blood if it came down to it.
He played a lot of my favorite songs. I don't have a set list for you all as I was too busy looking around and laughing and talking to my sister. I'm sure it'll turn up somewhere. The sound at the IPayOne Center sucked, but that was to be expected. IT's never been any good. Ricky's dancers did a great job. They were totally high energy and working it. You saw them sweating their butts off.

Kinda Review - Playground Slap
Well, we went to the Triple Crown Pub, but we showed up late. We had to have that last bit of beer before we got there and well, you know how parking can be insane. We walked in and they were saying good bye. I was pretty bummed as this may have been their last live show - so the rumour goes. But who knows. I'm all for another show. I've seen them before and they were great to listen to and dammit, I want to hear them AGAIN! Come on Playground Slap - one more time?
I haven't been to the Triple Crown Pub in forever and I completely forgot how loud it can get in there. The second band (closer?) came on and man was it loud. The room is small, so you don't need a lot of power in there to get your point of cross. At times it was too muddy because it was so loud, you coudn't distinguish what was going on and in my opinion, it drowned out the lead singers vocals. I left after the thrid or fourth song. My poor ears couldn't handle it.

Dirty Frank will be performing at the San Diego County Fair aka Del Mar Fairgrounds.
They are a Pearl Jam tribute band. I've never heard of them or seen them, but I think I may do so this summer.

Playground Slap at Triple Crown Pub
If you've missed them the last couple of times they've performed, go see them on Saturday, April 21st. Playground Slap will be playing at the Triple Crown Pub located at 3221 Adams Ave, SD, 92116. Fono/Swandive: Beauty Bar 04/13/07
We headed over to the Beauty Bar last night to catch both Fono and Swandive. It's been a long time since I've seen either one and I was excited to check them out, especially since our friend Ivan Hurtado joined Swandive and I kept promising I'd go see their band.
We arrived a bit late, but we got to see the last song and a half of Fono's set. I really enjoyed their sound. If I remember correctly, their sound has changed a little. They had the classic equipment onstage and that definitely made a difference soundwise. It was LOUD! It was so loud, my ear drums were about to burst! hahaha But it was clear. It wasn't muddled like most loud music tends to be. I definitely need to check out their full set next time they play. But being on time is always hard for me. hahaha

So after a few drinks Swandive came on stage.. Their sound, though reminiscent of their old stuff, has a little different tweak to it. It's a little more upbeat than when I last saw them, which I loved. The musicianship on stage was great. They were all having fun and swaying around to their music - just like the crowd. I found it interesting that they incorporated a little snippet of Don't Stand So Close To Me by the Police into one of their songs. It's one of my favorite songs, so it was a nice surprise. They played a song titled Push, Pull, Choke, which I think was dedicated to their Bass player, Ivan Hurtado, but he said something about Shake and Bake, whatever that means. It was funny. It made Ivan laugh. I can definitely hear Swandive on the Big Sonic Chill. Is that still around? I need to listen to the radio a little more. hehehe
There was a $5 dollar cover and they made a killing. It was a nicely packed house. It wasn't too much so it turned you off, but it was comfortable. And the scene was reminded me of when Beauty Bar first opened. It was refreshing.

iTunes going subscription mode?
I read this article on Cnnmoney.com and found it very interesting. I am a mac owner and I use iTunes all the time. I'm on the fence about this. I don't know if I would want to pay a flat fee in order to use iTunes. I download music through iTunes, but I don't know if it's enough to subscribe and pay every month. I really hope they don't do this. CEO Steve Jobs has gone on the record stating that he didn't like the concept behind the monthly subscription fee, but who knows. If the price is right, I'm sure they'd be willng to change their policy.

Costco Busted!
Hahahahaha. Do they not have some sort of legal team that checks this stuff out. I mean a fake autographed guitar!
Pitchfork just busted Costco for selling fake autographed guitars on their website. From Pitchfork:
We're as flummoxed as you are, but yeah, Costco is apparently selling these things for a cool $899.99 (shipping and handling included!). The "Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes Signed Acoustic Guitar" features such eye- and ear-catching attributes as "rich, full tone," a "natural spruce top," a "rosewood bridge," and "cream binding on the body and neck [that] adds crisp style." It also features a scribble of a signature allegedly from Conor himself on its face.
Conor's PR people denied that anyone had signed anything for Costco and the guitars were swiftly pulled from the website. Apparently, Conor Oberst is some kind of music-making person. He seems very well regarded among his own kind. —MEGHANN MARCO

Iha not on board...
Straight from the horses mouth.
"It has never been totally clear which members of the original Pumpkins lineup would be involved in this much-gossiped about reunion tour and new album and now Iha assures us that he will absolutely not be part of it.
“No, I’m not part of the current Smashing Pumpkins album or tour, I haven’t spoken to Billy in years. I’m writing for a solo record, which I’m going to record this year, and working on my indie label Scratchie Records,” says Iha, referring to the label he co-founded in 2002 with Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schelsininger. Scratchie has put out albums by Albert Hammond Jr. and The Sounds, among others."
Makes me a bit sad. I would love to see the Smashing Pumpkins again with Iha on board. I mean, it wouldn't be the same without him.

Kate Moss & Pete Doherty do home videos
Apparently it's a short film shot by himself at Kate's cottage in Cotswolds.
He's playing a new song, Kate is shown, wearing close to nothing.
And she adds her own little tidbits to his song by interrupting him by saying things like "Sonny and Cher we're not" and throwing in the word C*** and other random things.
Here's the video courtesy of You Tube. The sound quality isn't the best, but if you turn it up, you can probably hear it all.

Hello Friends,
I am backstage at the venue in Oslo and I just had to make the very sad decision to cancel the rest of the European tour. I have been suffering from a sinus and bronchial infection for the last 3 months, and last night in Stockholm I finally pushed my voice and body farther than they are able to go. Last night I kept yelling at the monitor guy because I didn't recognize the sound that was coming out of the monitor as my own voice, and it took me until the second song to realize that the sound was coming from me. Today I can barely speak, or make any sound, so finishing the shows is no longer possible.
I have had several doctors advise me to cancel shows weeks ago, and I have been trying to push through, but for my own health and safety I need to have sinus surgery so I can get better and start the recovery process. We are all very sad, because we were very much looking forward to playing these shows, and we could not imagine canceling a show unless it was physically impossible to do. We apologize to the fans that have been waiting to see us, and we promise to try and come back as soon as it is humanly possible...
We would like to thank everyone who has been coming to the shows, and the outpouring of love and support for our music that we have felt. Wish me luck with the doctors,

Plain White Ts
Once again, thanks to Karla, I was able to see the Plain White Ts at the 91x Studios.
Going in, I didn't know what to expect. I couldn't recall one song of theirs. But I always enjoy free shows and I like to be surprised. They played 4 songs off their album. The Plain White Ts told us about their morning, which consisted of eggs. And to be honest, I don't think the DJ did a great job of interviewing them. He could've asked some better questions and actually studied a little about the band. The band kept correcting him when the facts weren't exactly right.
The guys were coming to San Diego fresh from Las Vegas, well, not exactly fresh as they all looked to be hung over. And the proof was to be seen at the autograph table. Their rider consisted of Corona, fruit, water, triscuits, and something else. One of the band members even had his sunglasses on at the table! But they put on a good show for the lucky few that saw them at the 91x studios. I wasn't fond of the drummer. He just didn't rub me the right way. It seemed like he had a chip on his shoulder. I don't know.
How would I describe them? They're a little poppy, but with some rock appeal. It was an acoustic set, so I couldn't get the full picture when it came to this band, but I liked them. I'd buy their cd to hear the rest of their songs. Their newest album is titled Every Second Counts and here's a link to their website.

Night in Ipanema - Healing Notes, Inc
I had the pleasure of attending "Night in Ipanema" last night. It was a fundraiser held by Healing Notes, Inc. at the NTC Promenade McMillan Company Event Center. This fundraiser benefits the children in the NICU ward at Scripps La Jolla. This helps them get the much needed music therapy for their terminal illness'.

Allison and Veronica did a great job making the event come together. It was reminiscent of a Night in Ipanema with beautiful green trees and plants scattered throughout the location. Dining Out Magazine donated wonderful Latin cuisine provided by Humphrey's, Delirio's, The Turquoise, and several other restaurants. San Diego Stage & Lighting provided the stage and BMF audio provided the sound for Tita Lima and her band.
Healing Notes, Inc. also had a wonderful silent auctions. All items were donated and varied. They had an acoustic/electric guitar and cover from Portugal, and electric upright piano, a bottle of wine and massage, and gift certificates to restaurants throughout San Diego.
Before Tita Lima and her band played, the DJ, Steve, played many sounds from Brazil, both new and old. It was a great eclectic mix. Tita Lima and her band took the stage and blew the crowd away. Everyone was swaying in there seats with smiles on their faces to the sounds of Tita's most current album, 11:11 and to the other Brazilian favorites she played. There was even a crowd gathered in front of the stage dancing on the non-existent dance floor. They played with soul and with love for the music. It was on a real, genuine level. If Tita Lima and her band ever come to a city near you, see her! She just played at SXSW (South By Southwest) in Austin, Texas.

Wolfmother
Yes folks, Wolfmother is coming to San Diego and I am excited. I had tickets to see them last September 2006, but they cancelled because the bass player's girlfriend went into labor. Congratulations!
They refunded the money and now they are scheduled to play on May 8th, 2007. Tickets go on-sale Friday, March 23rd at 10am. They're $22.50 a apiece - I think.

Hot Girls, Hot Boys, Hot Girls
I went to the Casbah on Sunday, March 18th and I got a great surprise. We went to see Playground Slap. I didn't have any expectations coming to the show, but I was excited. It's a friend of a friend's band.
I didn't know who else was playing but when Addiquit took the stage and owned it, I was quite surprised. I wasn't sure if I was going to like her or not, but she did a great job. I really enjoyed her raps. She said some funny shit and most of it were real things that people shy away from.
She had some guy onstage helping her with the music, but she outted him at the end saying she didn't know the guy. Is this true, who knows? But it was funny. I really liked the tank top she was wearing. I didn't take any pictures of her. I should have, but I was distracted. Damn. I'd like to see her in a different venue, perhaps The Kensington Club? I wonder what type of people would go and see her there. I'm a new fan.

What? 18 year hiatus? I know! But they were great. There was one point when the mood came down a little. It wasn't because the music was bad, it was just too trippy and slow. But all in all, I had a good time.
I unfortunately missed Lesley and the Lys. I was tired, the hater was tired and I had to work in the morning. So off we went to bed.

I'm a huge fan of Morrissey and The Smiths. I've been to several concerts and I've never been completely disappointed. Some concerts were better than others, but I always left tipsy and happy.
I know there are a lot of people out there that think Morrissey is done and old news. People think he can't contribute to music anymore. But in all reality, he has contributed so much, that it will never end. He has influenced so many bands that one will never escape. Personally, I don't mind. I can listen to Morrissey and to The Smiths over and over again.
I heard the tickets are $50 each, general admission. I don't think that's too bad. I'm even considering trying to go to both the Los Angeles and San Diego shows.
Hope to see someone, anyone at either the Los Angeles or San Diego shows.

Rise Against
If you haven't had a chance to see this band - do it.
I was lucky enough to catch an acoustic set at the 91X Studiosand it was great. Lead singer Tim McIlrath and guitarist Zach Blair were the only ones that played, both on guitars. The other two members were roaming around the studio, only to be seen at the end for the autograph and photograph session. The audience consisted of about maybe 20 or so contest winners and their guests.
Rise Against played 4 songs. They played 3 of their hits, Prayer of the Refugee, Ready to Fall, Swing Life Away! and a cover of Danzig's Mother. I have video of the song, but it'll have to wait until later. I have to upload and change the format and do all of that good stuff so everyone can view it.
They did a quick QnA session. They were pretty fun. They kept it light and easy going. You could tell that they were having fun and happy to be there. They joked around a lot and made everyone laugh.
They're playing tonight at the iPayOne Center (formerly know as The Sports Arena) with My Chemical Romance. They're on first and they promise to be on time.
I was a fan before their acoustic set, but I'm an even bigger fan now. I hope I can catch them at another show sometime in the future.

The Mooney Suzuki
The Beauty Bar in San Diego hosted The Mooney Suzuki on Wednesday, March 7th. And if you weren't there, you missed out!
The cover was $8, but well worth it. A band of this caliber usually charges more than that and you can't see them at the smaller venues. They have been around for a long while and they have a great following.
I've seem them 5 times, basically every time they roll through San Diego and they have never disappointed me. They bring their best game every time. Their set is high-impact, dancey, noisy, and FUN. I have pictures. I just need to upload them. I'll eventually get around to it - I promise!
They brought with them a band from Sweden. I can't recall the name, but I have an email out to The Mooney Suzuki to find out. This band was great. They were dancey and fun. The band consisted of 3 boys, who I think were 15-16 years old. They looked that young and they were beyond adorable. They danced non-stop and they had some great beats. It was very refreshing to see a band like this in San Diego. It's nice to know that somewhere out there, there is great music being created.
